Hi there,
|I was happy to hear from you and the hear of your book also. | have written a book entitled "Beginnings - A Pretty Story". It traces the history of our family from Daniel Pretty (my great, great grandfather to my father. Daniel served as a young man in the British military against Napoleon and later in our war of 1812. After the war he was entitled to a land grant but was too young for this. By 1821 a young Scotttish girl (Margaret Wark) came with her family to Lanark County and they settled as pioneers in the bush country above Lanark Village. Somehow they met and were married. I knew the regiment Daniel served in and also the ship Margaret's family came in and so was able to trace both of them in othe books and records. And so wriing the book was not easy but with a lot of searching at the National Archives in Ottawa and the Ontario Archives in Ottawa along with borrowing microfilms-microfiche from the Library Loan program I was able to piece the information together.
I also wrote an autobiography witht the story of my life intitled "Billy" When I was young I was called Billy by my family and I hated it. At the beginning of grade 4 we signed our names for the teacher and I signed mine as Bill Pretty. The teacher callled me Bill from then on and the kids in my class cllled me Bill. But may family still called me Billy. Some of my sisters (I have 5) still call me Billy and their children call me this also. So I gave up and called my book "Billy". Sometimes we think that our lives are not interesting enough for a book. But as I started to put things down it it amazing the number of interesting things I remembered. I have wonderful childhood memories. And some great memories later on. Some things were not great such as the time I attemtped suicide and spent three months in a mental hospital. But it happened and I am so glad I was not successful as I believe I have done many really good things since that time and my family has been so good to me. And perhaps my story will help someone else. Each book is just under 100 pages long and so I could enclose each as an attachment to an email. If you are interested in seeing one or both let me know. Thanks for your interest.
